Our company history

Founded in 1993, Cabot Communications, headquartered in Bristol, UK, was one of the forerunners of the digital TV revolution. Working in partnership with early innovators such as SES-ASTRA, Telewest and the BBC, Cabot helped to develop some of the industry's pioneering solutions for interactive services, content creation and delivery.  Cabot was one of the earliest contributors to the MHEG-5 interactive standard and was responsible for the first public demonstration of a MHEG-5 engine on a real set-top-box in 1998. 

From that point onwards, Cabot developed an exclusive focus on open-standards based software technology for the DVB market, receiving several awards, including the 2004 Cable & Satellite International Product of the Year award for Best Interactive Technology and with many products featuring Cabot middleware winning ‘best buy’ awards.  Recently, Cabot won the ‘Best Interactive TV Technology or Application’ award at the Cable and Satellite 2008 Awards and was also shortlisted in the ‘Best HDTV Technology or Project’ category.

 
A collaborative approach

Cabot has developed and nurtured long-term collaborations with key Consumer Electronics and Semiconductors manufacturers in order to develop turnkey solutions and drive the continuous development of the digital TV industry.  As a result, Cabot has long-established working relationships with a wide range of manufacturers.  Cabot always endeavours to become the partner of choice by demonstrating a deep understanding of its customers’ business needs, along with a strong commitment to providing the latest technological innovations within the shortest possible development times.  Our ongoing collaborations have lead to the deployment of robust solutions for over 30 brands, with over 18 million deployments across the marketplace.   We are also committed to jointly exploring and investing in new solutions for emerging digital TV markets.

Product research and development and continuous technological enhancement are at the heart of Cabot’s approach to innovation.  Cabot’s extensive resources are dedicated to ensuring that our solutions are at the forefront of the industry, taking full advantage of the latest technology and industry trends.

As an independent company, Cabot enjoys the freedom to forge close working relationships with many of the leading industry organisations such as the Digital Television Group (DTG), Freeview and Digitag, which provide an inside perspective on evolving industry standards.  As part of this activity, Cabot is committed to contributing to leading industry initiatives and programmes which help to drive the continuous development of the digital television industry.  Cabot continues to be a key contributor to the development of the MHEG-5 standard and is chairing the development of the DTG HD MHEG profile and is responsible for driving the specification. Cabot is also actively involved in development of the Return Channel Specification for MHEG, in conjunction with the DTG and is a Founder Member of Impala, the International MHEG Promotion Alliance.

To compliment this activity, Cabot has invested in a dedicated full-time research team whose outputs formulate an integral part of Cabot’s product development roadmap.  In addition, Cabot’s technological collaborations provide Cabot with a unique capability to provide its customers with the most progressive and practical digital technology.

Cabot is committed to providing its customers with a comprehensive range of support services in order to drive down product development time and free-up precious internal resources.  Cabot has a flexible, cooperative approach to project development to meet individual company requirements.  A project can be completely outsourced to Cabot’s highly skilled engineers or Cabot staff can work alongside and augment in-house resources, providing the complimentary skills required. 

Cabot can manage and execute an entire project from planning, technology selection, integration, testing, validation and field support or provide the required expertise at any of the various stages of a project.  Cabot has extensive experience on a range of different silicon architectures with multiple toolsets and is particularly experienced in identifying those elusive issues created by the interaction of various system components.  We are also pleased to offer ongoing software maintenance and support packages which provide extensive technical support services to our customers.  Whichever level of support required, Cabot is dedicated to providing the highest standard of customer service.
